Sustainable & Organic, Amy’s Kitchen Now Also ‘Best Place to Work’
Among the many accolades and fulsome praise San Francisco-based Amy’s Kitchen from media observers and food critics alike, another honor was recently bestowed on the beloved vegan eatery.
It was named to the prestigious “Best Places to Work” list by the San Francisco Business Times. Furthermore, Amy’s Kitchen landed the No. 10 spot in the “largest company category” out of more than 100 members.
Amy’s Kitchen is renowned for its commitment to serving food that is incredibly delicious while working diligently to maintain a sustainability model that includes making use of renewable energy to power the enterprise.
The vegan food server recently entered into an agreement with Ørsted’s Sunflower Wind Farm of Marion County, Kansas, to purchase renewable energy. The deal will power about 30% of the firm’s organic frozen and packaged food market enterprises. This is in cooperation with Walmart’s “Gigaton Power Purchase Agreement.”
Amy’s Kitchen opened its doors in 1987. Its co-founders, Rachel and Andy Berliner, were determined to create a ‘family-centric” organic and vegan food operation. Speaking of family-friendly, the Berliners also applied this philosophy to their employees whom they consider to be “part of the family.”
Amy’s puts its money where its philosophy is. To that end, the company has awarded an amazing 1,400 scholarships to the children of employees. It began the practice in 2000 and has since given $1.5 million in scholarships. Many of those awards went to youths who would be the first of their family to seek a college degree.
Amy’s Kitchen can lay a credible claim to being a pioneer of the organic food industry in America. When the business opened in 1987, there simply was no official certification for organic foods. Thus, the Berliners decided to grow their own. They did that by investing in local farms that could produce the quality of natural, organic foods they needed.
From sustainable energy to certified organic fresh foods and superior employee engagement, Amy’s Kitchen continues to earn its iconic status as an American original.
