In the late 1970s, health care in Rio de Janeiro was of low quality due to most hospitals being government initiatives. This fact meant that the hospitals also lacked proper diagnoses equipment. Healthcare, in general, was very disappointing. Jorge Moll saw this and started a health diagnostics laboratory in 1977 in Rio de Janeiro. With Rio being a significant authority, he saw it fit to grow the lab into a network of hospitals. This way, the laboratories would serve the large and increasing populace in a better way. In 2010, he sold the laboratory arm of the outfit. Again in the same year, he went ahead to buy a hospital group in Brazil (http://idor.org.br/midia/dr-jorge-moll-fala-sobre-emocoes). Sao Luiz is now Rede D’Or Sao Luiz under Dr. Jorge Moll’s stewardship. It is a publicly traded company with the Moll family holding the most significant share. Jorge Moll also serves as the chairman of the board of directors. Under the organization, Jorge runs 32 hospitals countrywide.
In Support of Better Healthcare
In 2016, the hospital faced huge debts and hefty taxes. It is then that the Total Health Management Model was developed to provide good quality healthcare at a low cost (Scholar.Google). Jorge Moll is a huge fan of technology. In his opinion, healthcare has enjoyed great strides because of technology. For that reason, Rede D’Or Group of Hospitals is the most prominent sponsor of D’Or Institute for Research and Education. The non-profit organization supports scientific and technological progress in healthcare. This is a bid by Jorge to support medical advancements.
The Man Himself
Dr. Jorge Moll is a cardiologist by training and a healthcare entrepreneur. He holds a Masters degree from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. He is a kind man with most of his charitable donations being anonymous. You can never estimate the worth of bucks he has dedicated to philanthropy so far, but the truth is that it is a significant amount. He is on a quest to make healthcare better, more affordable and accessible to people from all walks of life.
